Celebrating Safely: Essential Fire Safety Tips for Fireworks, Grilling, and Campfires on the Fourth of July
At Abbotts Cleanup & Restoration, we’ve seen firsthand the aftermath of accidents that could have been prevented. As your local fire damage restoration experts, we’re here to help you stay safe while celebrating. Here are some essential fire safety tips to keep your holiday fun, not fiery.
🎆 Fireworks Safety: Leave It to the Pros
Attend a professional fireworks show instead of lighting them at home. Consumer fireworks cause nearly 20,000 fires annually in the U.S.
If you must use fireworks:
Light them one at a time, and back away quickly.
Never relight duds—wait 20 minutes and soak them in water.
Keep a hose or bucket of water nearby.
Never allow young children to handle fireworks, and supervise older kids closely.
Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area, away from homes, dry grass, and other flammables.
🍔 Grilling Safety: Cook Smart
Backyard grilling is a staple of July 4th, but it’s also a leading cause of residential fires this time of year.
Keep grills at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
Clean your grill regularly to remove grease buildup, which can ignite easily.
Never leave your grill unattended once it’s on.
Check for gas leaks if you’re using a propane grill. A quick test: Apply soapy water to the hose and turn on the gas—bubbles indicate a leak.
Keep a fire extinguisher or baking soda nearby—never water on a grease fire.
🔥 Campfire & Fire Pit Safety: Respect the Flame
Whether you’re camping out or relaxing in the backyard, open flames need close attention.
Build fires in designated pits or clear a 10-foot area around your fire.
Never use flammable liquids like gasoline to start or accelerate a fire.
Keep a bucket of water, shovel, or sand nearby to extinguish flames quickly.
Fully extinguish the fire before leaving—pour water on all embers, stir the ashes, and pour more water until the area is cool to the touch.
